Windy City Shopping

Last week my husband took me on a surprise trip to Chicago. It was great since I lived downtown Chicago for about 3 years when I was working in retail. Walking in the beautiful fall weather and shopping all the way down the magnificient mile, State Street and Oak Street it was refreshing to see how another city merchandised the fall trends. Working there back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I remember Marshall Field’s, and Carson Pirie Scott were the large department stores in the downtown area. Since I had worked as a General Manager for Federated Department Stores for over 20 years, I just had to stroll through the State Street Marshall Fields store. It was rather sad to see the grand dame of department stores was gone. While they still maintained alot of their better and couture brands, the moderate price points and private label brands of Macy’s were everywhere. Walking past the abandoned Carson Pirie Scott building also brought back fond memories. I remember shopping in these two giant stores for days on end to add to my seasonal wardrobe pieces and taking home shopping bags full of new styles for the season. Although I personally experienced all the department store buy-outs and mergers over the last 20 years years, I realized that times do change and I wanted to shop in Chicago. The fall trends were everywhere but I think it always amazing and creative how different stores visual departments interpret the latest fashion and merchandise floors and mannequins to shine the spotlight on an trend. I had to purchase a few trends myself to add a more modern flair to my personal wardrobe. Finding a great INC black shrunken jacket was perfect to wear with my jeans for a casual look or dress pants for a more professional look. I also bought a great modern blouse with lantern sleeves which looks very updated and again can be taken from casual to dressy. My last purchase was a great pair of beautiful kid leather gloves in platinum with small button detailing. By purchasing a few basic pieces I am ready to step in to fall in style.
